  • Barbarea vulgaris / yellow rocket

    • showy yellow brassica with relatively large flowers
    • leaves deeply lobed with larger terminal lobe, smaller toward top of stems
    • common on roadsides and waste places in spring
    • siliques about an inch long and curving upward, with beaks and pedicels

  • Cirsium scariosum / elk thistle

    • usually tall, quite prickly thistle with deeply lobed, spiny leaves
    • large, lavender (pink to purple) flowers hidden by the long leaves
    • covered with white hairs giving it a silvery look overall
    • in moist areas, in full sun

    • yellow flowers, large for a crucifer

    • highly disturbed areas: wastelands, field edges etc.

    • long (3"-ish) stick-like seedpods, erect and hugging the stem
    • nondescript mustard-family 4 petalled flowers in a cluster at the top
    • tall stem with leaves clasping the stem (no petioles)
    • generally in exposed, dry habitats
